Required Course Materials

Below is a listing of the books recommended for this class. Be sure to note which ones are required.
Title: Assembly Language for Intel-Based Computers w/CD (edition: 5th)
Author: Kip Irvine
Publisher:     Prentice Hall
Textbooks for most Distance Learning courses can be purchased at any TCC Campus Bookstore or online at www.efollett.com. For courses taught on a specific campus, textbooks may only be available at that campus bookstore. Students who are unable to find the textbooks or supplies needed for a Distance Learning course are encouraged to check with all four TCC Campus Bookstores to find out if they have the materials in stock (be prepared to give your course title and number, instructor’s name and synonym or section number). In the event that all four TCC Campus Bookstores are sold out of any required textbooks or other materials for a Distance Learning course, be sure to notify the Center for Distance Learning at (817) 515-4357. The Center cannot supply the student with textbooks or supplies, but will work to help the student locate the materials in a timely manner.

Methods of Instruction

Different instructional methods will be used in this course. Much of the instruction will be provided in this online format, providing flexibility and convenience for the students. Email, message boards, and discussion boards will be used in this course. The students will take the three major tests on campus. All other home work and assignments answers will be done online. Email will be sent to student's Email account (username@dl.tccd.edu). Email should be checked from Monday through Saturday, instructions, and assignments.

Accessing the Class Site

The student will access the class site in the following manner:
  • Go to: http://dl.tccd.edu and select the "Virtual Classrooms (Log In)" link.
  • Enter the username and password on this page.
  • Your username will be in the format of firstname.lastname and your password will be the first initial of your last name and the last four digits of your Colleague ID number. For example, if George Washington were a student with a Colleague ID number of 1234567, his username would be george.washington and his password would be w4567.

Please note that if you are a returning student or have a common name, you may have a number following your username. These usernames will follow this format: john.smith2 or jane.erye3. Please try firstname.lastname first; if it is not successful then try firstname.lastname2 or firstname.lastname3.
  • Students may change their password by clicking "Edit User Profile" on the left side of the screen and choosing "Change Password" at the top of the next screen.
  • Students should not share their passwords with other students as quizzes and e-mails can be sent with that information. You are responsible for anything submitted using your username and password.

E-mail

All e-mail will be sent to the student's distance learning e-mail account (username@dl.tccd.edu). It is the student's responsibility to frequently check e-mail sent to that account. Students who fail to check e-mail on a regular basis risk missing important class announcements, instructions, and assignments. There are two ways to check e-mail:
  • use the Webmail link on the class web site to check for class e-mail;
  • have e-mail forwarded to another email account.
All Internet faculty have committed to reading and responding to e-mail messages at least five days per week, typically within twenty-four hours. Please note, requests for assistance with technical issues should be directed to the Help Desk at help@dl.tccd.edu and not the course instructor. James.Dang@dl.tccd.edu

Special Information

1. Student must read all lessons and assignments.
2. Student must complete and submit (use notepad or Microsoft Word documents) all assignments by the due dates.
3. Student must take two exams at the Room ESEE 2229 (Computer Lab) on Southeast campus.

Student Services and Policies

Distance Learning students have access to all TCCD student support programs, services, and activities, as well as all academic support services. These services include counseling, advising, library and learning information resources, and general and discipline-specific computer labs. Some services are available online while others are only available on campus. More information regarding these resources and services can be found in the “Student Services” area of this Web site. A Student Handbook, which addresses student rights and responsibilities, and the College’s Policy and Regulation Manual, are also linked on this site.

Withdrawals

All withdrawals must be initiated by the student. Students may withdraw from any course on or before Saturday, April 12, online through http://wa.tccd.edu, or by contacting the campus Registrar’s Office in person. It is strongly suggested that students withdrawing in person request a receipt. Students who withdraw online are responsible for verifying that their electronic drop processing was completed by printing a copy of their unofficial transcript or student schedule showing the grade of W. Until a student is officially withdrawn, the student remains on the class roll and may receive a grade of F for the course. Students who are unable to withdraw in person or electronically may mail or fax a letter to the registrar specifying class(es) from which the withdrawal(s) is/are requested. The letter or fax must include the student’s name, Colleague ID number, date and class information along with the student’s signature. If mailed, the request for withdrawal must be postmarked on or before the last day to drop, or if faxed, the date shown on the fax confirmation must be on or before the last day to drop a class. State Withdrawal Policy - Important Section 51.907 of the Texas Education Code, enacted by the State of Texas, Spring 2007, applies to students who enroll in a public institution of higher education as a first time freshman in Fall 2007 or later. The College may not permit a student to drop more than six courses, including those taken at another Texas public institution of higher education. All courses dropped after the Official Day of Record are included in the six-course limit unless (1) the student withdraws from all courses or (2) the drop is authorized by an appropriate College official as an approved Drop Exception. Further information on the new withdrawal policy can be found at the TCCD Web site: http://www.tccd.edu.

Help Desk

If students have technical problems or questions and need assistance navigating the classroom, a Help Desk is available to provide the support needed to be successful in the class. Information about the Help Desk can be found below.
  • Location: South Campus, SLIB 2201A
  • Hours: Monday - Thursday, 8 a.m. - 7 p.m.; Friday, 8 a.m. - 3 p.m.
  • Telephone Support: 817.515.HELP (817.515.4357). Telephone Support is provided Monday - Thursday, 8 a.m. - 7 p.m. and Friday, 8 a.m. - 3 p.m.
  • E-mail Support: help@dl.tccd.edu. Help Desk staff monitor e-mail continuously Monday - Thursday, 8 a.m. - 7 p.m. and Friday, 8 a.m. - 3 p.m. In addition, e-mail sent to this account is checked once Friday evening, twice on Saturday, and once on Sunday.
  • Students may also submit a Help Desk Ticket by clicking on the purple link at the top of any page titled "Help Desk." Help Desk Tickets are monitored on the same schedule as e-mail.

Questions to the Help Desk should be technical in nature. Questions about classroom content and grades need to be directed to the instructor.

Special Accommodations

If a student requires special accommodations based on a disability, the student must be registered with the Disability Support Services Office and must inform the teacher about the needed accommodations the first week of classes.

Student Conduct

TCC has the responsibility and authority to formulate and enforce rules of student conduct that are appropriate and necessary to further the educational goals of the College and its students. Students who enroll must accept responsibility for their behavior and for their ultimate success in higher education. To create a positive climate for learning, TCC expects all students to abide by a Code of Student Behavior. The District Handbook for Students, available at TCCD's Website www.tccd.edu, has full information regarding this. To summarize:

Students must maintain high standards of scholastic honesty. Violations of the TCC Code of Student Behavior include but are not limited to cheating on tests or assignments, plagiarism, and collusion; violence or threats of violence; loud or abusive language; and failure to comply with the direction of College officials and instructors.

Children on Campus

Children are not permitted at orientation sessions, seminars, labs, in the viewing areas, or in the Testing Centers. Children are not to be left unattended on college property at any time.

Campus Closings

All TCC campuses will be closed Monday, January 21, for the Martin Luther King Day. In addition, all campuses will close for Spring Break March 16 through March 23. In the event of inclement weather, if TCC classes are cancelled, distance learning on-campus orientations, seminars, testing, and laboratories will also be cancelled. Stay tuned to your local radio or television station or go to www.tccd.edu for information on campus closings.

The instructor reserves the right to make changes in this syllabus if time or other factors necessitate doing so.
